Here's a fun freebie for you to go with your vocabulary instruction. (Click on the picture to snag it.) I use this with my Algebra Unit, but it will work for any subject. Just have students choose one of their vocabulary words. Then have them morph the vocabulary word into a zoo animal. Poster paper and a rubric is provided in this freebie. This would make a great activity for your GT students, too. If you have time, please leave me some feedback. Thanks!

I use this activity as a fast finsher's project during our Zoo-quation Adventure. At the end of my Algebra Unit, students work through several Algebra puzzles as a team. This is lots of fun for the students and great practice for perseverance.
Students travel through the zoo solving problems and searching for clues
to solve duck's quack ups. They work together as a cooperative team in
their quest to persevere. Zooquation student teams solve various mathematical puzzles earning
keys. Your students learn algebraic skills and the value of addition,
subtraction, and logic, while having the enjoyment of discovering the
magic of mathematical puzzles.

I've just finished up a huge Place Value Unit with my students. I poured my heart and soul into this unit. In the past I haven't dug very deep into place value. Now that Common Core is here, students must have a strong understanding of place value.
I got the chance to try out a new product from Laura Candler, Place Value Partners. The thing I love most about Laura's products is the ease of implementation. I got the product a little after 10:00 p.m. and within 15 minutes I had it printed and ready to go for the next day.
Place Value Partners is a game for math centers, cooperative learning
partners, small guided math groups, or even whole class instruction. The
concept is similar to the game Battleship with partners facing each
other across a barrier. Instead of ships and a grid, they have a place
value game board and number tiles or number cards. One partner is the
“Sender” who calls out the numbers and places, and the other is the
“Receiver” who listens and builds the number on his or her game board.
The two compare boards, discuss the correct response, and then record
various forms of the number in their journals or on a recording page.
This activity includes five different variations: three levels for whole
numbers and two levels for decimals.

I used the game as a math center. I have an uneven number of students, so I had an extra receiver board set up. The kids loved the "game" and caught on really quickly.
Laura has included two versions, one that's aligned with the Common Core and the other that
is essentially the same but uses more traditional terminology. The CCSS
uses slightly different place value terms. What used to be "standard
form" is now "base-ten numeral," and "word form" is now "number name." This game is must have for your Place Value Unit! To read more about it, check out Laura's post HERE.
Another must have is place value dice from EAI Education. This is one of the best purchases I've made for my math centers. We used them daily throughout this unit. I've created a little freebie for you to use with the dice. They simply roll the dice, spin to see what place they are rounding to, and round. Super simple and really helps seal the deal when teaching rounding.

I remember during the first 5 years of my teaching career I dreaded the first week of school. Yes, I said the first 5 years! I knew what to do after I got started, but I just had trouble getting started. Luckily, I stumbled onto some great books by seasoned teachers that showed me what teaching procedures look like. As I started putting together this back to school unit, I thought back to what I've learned about teaching procedures. I have tons of back to school activities that I've collected over the years, and I'm sure you do to. But how do you use those activities to teach students your classroom procedures? That is what I considered when I put this packet together.

When you think about your favorite beginning of the year cooperative activity, consider using an anchor chart to show students what teamwork looks like and sounds like. Be explicit when teaching your procedures and routines.

I've never heard of this and didn't even know it was possible. I can think of some cool writing prompts to go with this. This is a must read.
I use these daily in my classroom. They are great for center games and any repetitive skills you want to practice. I got a sample of one at a teachers conference. It had an opening in the side, and I fell in love with it. However, they are really expensive. I recommend trying these first. If you already use whiteboards in your classroom, I'm sure you will love these, too. You can get a dozen for about $12 at Oriental Trade.
Go check out other things everyone else has tried!

It stands for Science Technology Engineering and Math. Earlier in the year I set aside an entire day to celebrate the field of engineering. The students rotated through stations. Each station highlighted a different field of engineering and had a lab to showcase the specific field. All of the labs were inquiry based with very little teacher intervention. Each one helped to build critical-thinking and problem-solving skills. One of the labs was a the Windmill Challenge. Students had to make a windmill that would pull as many pennies as possible. They had different designs to choose from and had to figure out how to make it pull pennies. They had to work through the entire Engineer Design Process.

We carried the theme through lunch. Students made a solar oven and cooked their own hot dogs for lunch. This was not an inquiry activity. I walked them through the entire process. You can grab a copy of my solar oven design by clicking on the picture. You could easily turn this into an inquiry activity and also align it with the Next Generation Science Standards by letting the students design and test their own solar ovens. I'm thinking I might try it next year. This one was a super simple version and worked really well.
When my students got back from Spring Break, I had the room completely transformed into a outdoor camp. I could not believe how excited they were. One of my sweet boys said, "I was really not happy about having to come back to school, but then I walked in and saw the tent, and I knew everything was going to be great." Totally made the three hours I spent decorating worth it:) I also had a big banner outside the classroom welcoming them back.

This was my smoke and mirrors trick for sneaking in some test prep. I disguised it all with a camp theme. They really enjoyed it and it made the test prep tolerable.
I got most of the decorations from Oriental Trade. Since I had to take everything off the wall for testing anyway, I thought I would put up some decorations that could stay up. I put up a mountain backdrop, some pine trees, and camp signs. I even put some camp tablecloths on the tables for a little while. Those didn't last long because they aren't really practical for classroom use.. I also bought little camp journals for taking notes on test taking strategies. They loved them.
I put together a huge unit that covers several Common Core standards all with a camping theme. This product has six math, 5 reading, and 6 writing activities. I included several craftivities that would be great for the hallway. All of them aligned to Common Core standards. These activities are perfect for review, too. There are enough activities to keep you busy for a full week. .Testing is next week for me. I'm feeling really positive going into it. My kids have worked so hard! We are having our Testing Pep Rally on Friday, and they have a song and dance they are going to perform for the whole school. I even got them neon hats and shades. They are so excited. If you can't tell, I adore this group of kids. I'm already starting to get a little teary eyed thinking about sending them to 5th grade.
Have a great week and good luck with your testing!
First, I have a Saint Patrick's Writing Menu for you. The video prompt for this menu is ANY Lucky Charms commercial. Here is the one I'm using:

Next is the Social Studies St. Patrick's activity. This graphic organizer can be used with any nonfiction book about St. Patrick's Day. I'm using Gail Gibbon's book. I really love her nonfiction titles. You could also have students look up facts about St. Patrick's Day on the computer. Just click on either cover for a copy.
I've been working on lots of St. Patrick's Day goodies for my kids. I love the magic that goes along with St. Patrick's Day. I'm planning to spend a whole day celebrating and learning with leprechauns. All of these activities are aligned with Common Core, so you can feel really good about having fun while learning. Click on any of the pictures below to check the product out. I'm working on a St. Patrick's Social Studies freebie, and I hope to have that to you by tomorrow.

First, my very favorite St. Patrick's activity, The Case of the Missing Treasures. I love a good mystery. In this packet you get six mysteries for your students to solve using inferring skills. It includes a mini lesson on Evidence Based Terms. This would be perfect for test prep and helping students to answer open response test items.

Next is a charming little writing. I'm in love with this cute leprechaun writing. It includes a mini lesson, graphic organizer planning sheet, and adorable craftivity. Students use Lucky Charms cereal to replace words in their writing. This is one you will want to hang in the hallway.

Leprechaun Brew is my twist on Witches' Brew. We made Witches' Brew during our Halloween celebration, and I know they are going to love this just as much. This packet includes a math graphing activity, grammar activity, and cute picture book writing.

My students are becoming experts at working with factors, prime and composite numbers. One reason is the repeated practice I give them with these holiday factor products. In this one they will read a message left by a sneaky leprechaun and try to find the hidden clovers and maybe even the lucky prime number. It also includes a math station games that my students have been having fun playing.

And here's one more little math activity for teaching line plots. Line plots are another math activity I try to pull in often for repeated practice. I'm confident my students will go to 5th grade with this concept fully mastered. In this activity students must create a line plot of leprechaun heights and solve a mystery.

I don't think advertisement creators know what a blessing they are to teachers. I love the La Quinta and GEICO commercials. This commercials are PERFECT for teaching figurative language. I've created a freebie for you to go along with the commercials. The Kicking Butt and Taking Note's commercial is not included in my printable because I teach 4th grade, and the Boss Man would not let me use that one in the classroom. If you teach older students, use it as a model for how to complete the printable. I know the kids would find it hilarious.
This is how I would use these in the classroom.
Day 1: Idioms
1. Discuss what an idiom is.
2. Write an example on the board. (Draw picture of the literal and write the actual meaning like in the printable.)
3. Show the commercials and have students complete the printable.
4. Go over the answers to the printable.

Day 2: Similes
1. Discuss what makes a smile.
2. Show several GEICO Happier Than commercials. (Will need to change it to Happy As)
3. Assign the Happy As Commercial Challenge
4. Let students share their commercials.
My Fraction Fest was such a success, I decided to have a Geometry Fest, too. The had a great time going through each of the stations. All the hands-on activities were aligned to Common Core Standards. A couple were a review of 3rd grade CCS, but the rest were 4th grade CCS. There are only three geometry standards for 4th grade and this packet has an activity for each of them.

Let's face it, most teachers have one thing that just pushes their button. Personally, pencils are it for me. A student not having a pencil or needing to sharpen a pencil in the middle of my lesson drives me a little crazy. A student has to have a sharpened pencil, so what's a teacher to do? My solution was a classroom economy. I've used many different types of classroom economies over the years. All of them were great but some a little too complicated to maintain.I couldn't juggle the ones that required me to write out checks, cash them, and deduct taxes. Don't get me wrong, if you can do all that, I applaud you. I just personally can't do it. I've finally created the perfect classroom economy for the busy teacher and one that will eliminate the button pushing. Drum roll please..... Introducing the Easy Classroom Economy! (Click on the picture for your free copy) I give the students $10 every Friday afternoon. Every Wednesday I charge $5 for desk rent. If a student doesn't have enough money to pay for their rent, they have to do math facts sheets instead of participating in extra recess. (I love having this extra 15 minutes a week for motivating students, but I know many teachers wouldn't be allowed to give an extra recess. You could use their regular recess time instead. Another option is to have learning games time as the extra "recess".) On Friday afternoons, before I pass out the money for the next week, I open my store for students to spend their money. I have three baskets with small toys and cards with things like chew gum in class, homework coupon, free time on the computer, etc. The baskets are priced at $5, $15, and $25. Very simple and easy to maintain.
The best part of the system is that I use it as my behavior plan, too. I have a list of Fines and Fees that students must use their economy bucks on. This is where you stop letting them push your buttons. I made a list of all the things that drive me crazy and put a fine to the offense. My students are allowed to freely sharpen their pencil before 8:15 a.m. but after that it's going to cost them a $1. Just like magic, no one EVER asks to sharpen their pencil anymore. Really!!! Rarely do I have to supply a child with a pencil either because they now cost $2. No name on paper.......$1. Repeating directions.....$1. Going to the bathroom outside of bathroom breaks...........$1. Whining.......$2. Tattling for the pure pleasure of getting another student in trouble..........$2. Having a happy non-stressed out teacher...........Priceless!
Homework has its own separate reward and consequence. The one I use is very similar to the one Laura Candler recently blogged about. It's a great post that you must check out. Click HERE to read it.
The bottom line is I try not take a student's misbehavior or missing assignments personally. I charge them economy bucks for misbehavior and put them in study hall for missing assignments. Of course, there will be students that are not motivated by either of these methods, but it will work for most students. I'd love to hear what works for you in your classroom.
Here's a Writing Menu I whipped up for this week. These are great for engaging students and getting them excited about writing. My students always love these, especially the video prompt. This is a really fun Pixar video. I will try to add a Christmas Writing Menu by next week. It's hard to believe we only have two and half weeks before Christmas Break. Simply click the picture for your menu.

How many of you are still confused about Common Core? I just learned this week that my state will not test on Common Core for a couple more years. My students will still be tested over the old state standards which I'm no longer teaching. CRAZY! I think the thing that concerns me more than anything is the differences I'm seeing in implementation. The literacy seems to be consistent across the board BUT the MATH is has me very concerned. I've been trained exclusively in the Problem Based Learning (PBL) method. This is a stark difference from the old way of teaching. Before you had a set of standards that you taught and checked off the list. (By the way, I've seen numerous checklist for Common Core on TpT.) The PBL method is the complete opposite of the checklist method. The skill and drill is definitely OUT with this method. Students are asked to solve real-world problems. Students will use various methods for solving the problem and no one way is correct. Teachers will no longer teach students a set of rules or algorithms. Students will "discover" these on their on by being immersed in student discourse. The teacher's role will be that of a facilitator. The problem I've been faced with is there is absolutely NOTHING on the market to help with implementing this type of approach, so I was forced to create my own. While spending numerous hours looking at student work samples, I noticed the lack of consistency. In many cases it was hard to even know what answer the child came up with. Even among trained professionals there was disagreement over what the child was thinking. In the PBL method student thinking is the key. Again I came up with a method to help reduce the confusion. I needed to create a standard for solving problems, so we could put our focus on the more important things. That's how the A.L.I.E.N. method came about. The students choose their own method for solving the problem but are then asked to make sure it is in A.L.I.E.N. format, so we get a clear understanding of their thinking. A.L.I.E.N. stands for Answer, Label, Isolate, Explain, and Number Sentence. I love it, and it has helped tremendously when it comes to math discourse.
I've had the opportunity to look at several examples of student assessments for the Common Core Assessment that is coming sooner or later. If these examples are anything like what the real assessment will be like, those teachers not teaching the PBL method are doomed. Seriously these assessments are ridiculously hard. A child will need a lot more than the ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide to score proficient. I'm very curious to know if any others states are being trained in the PBL method.
This is a great math picture book for teaching capacity and measurement conversion.(Pastry School in Paris: An Adventure in Capacity) After reading the book, I let the students make Surprise Pudding. I buy a large box of instant pudding for each group of 5 students. I take the pudding out of the box, so they can't read the recipe on the box. (That's why I call it surprise pudding.) I give them a recipe card that requires them to convert to cups. Students get to do all the measuring and mixing. This is great for those students who don't have any experiences in cooking. Finally, we all enjoy a little taste of Surprise Pudding. Click on the picture below for your free copy of this activity.
Next, I have a free ebook that you just HAVE to read with your students. This book is from We Give Books. You will need to register, but it's free and fast. It is completely worth the time because they have so many great books. Just click the cover of the book for a copy. I also have a little printable to go with it. Just click on the pic for that, too.

I believe in helping students develop their own writing ideas and build their writing stamina. The first few weeks we work on developing ideas, and I don't provide writing prompts for students. I feel if I start off providing them with writing prompts, they won't develop the ability to develop topics on their own. After the first 6 weeks, I start providing students with a Writing Menu on Mondays. The writing menu always includes a video prompt and a picture prompt. First, I show the video and read the prompt. Then I read through the rest of the choices. Finally, I ask students for other ideas for writing, and they add these ideas to their idea bank. These menus are just suggestions and not required writing assignments. Students are always allowed to write on whatever topic they want. My students and I love Writing Workshop.
Here is an overview of my Writing Workshop Procedures:
1. Writing Aerobics (see description below) 5 minutes
(On Mondays, I introduce the Writing Menu before Quiet 10)
2. Date Stamp and Quiet 10: (10 minutes)
Students write the date in their writing notebook. I put on classical music, set the timer, and the students write for 10 minutes. (They are not allowed to get up, talk, etc.)
3. Notebook Check (I check their notebook to see if they wrote an adequate amount. If they don't, I have them continue during recess. It is rarely a problem for long.) 2 minutes
4. Writing Mini Lesson (I usually work on one the 6 Traits of Writing) 15-20 minutes
5. Writing Traits Practice (students practice a skill from the mini lesson) 10-20 minutes
6. Author Share ( I choose two students per day to share their writing. I set the timer for 2 minutes per student.) 5 minutes
I love using the Writing Workshop model and my students writing stamina is unbelievable by the end of the year. They NEVER say, "I don't know what to write about."
Now the Writing Menus I promised, click each of the pictures for your free copy. The link to the video for the writing menu follows each picture. If you like these, let me know because I have a bunch of these made and can write another blog post and give you more. I'm just not sure how people will like having the video prompt as part of the menu.
this writing menu uses the video clip from Disney Pixars, For the Birds. I use RealPlayer to download the videos from YouTube. Then I convert them to mp4 using Zamzar.com. A little time consuming but it works:)
WRITING AEROBICS

Writing Aerobics is a spiral writing program that is meant to be completed daily as part of your Writing Workshop. It only takes 5 minutes a day but the results are dramatic. It is 150 days of spiral figurative language exercises. My students become very proficient in using figurative language in their daily writing. I've turned it into a game and the students look forward to it everyday. I like to use foldables in my classroom. I created a couple of foldables for teaching the Standard and Metric System. This foldable works best on the larger 12' X 18' construction paper. The picture is on the smaller construction paper but you can see the labels are a little over the edges. I have created one for both the Standard and Metric system. You will need to fold both sides of the construction paper toward the middle and cut to make four windows. I've created a graphic organizer of the entire system, and that goes under the system window. I have students keep this foldable as a reference throughout our measurement unit. Click the picture below for your free copy.

Also here is a great product for teaching metric system conversion. It is the Magnetic Metric Staircase from Educational Insights.

Just stick the chart on your magnetic whiteboard. (The magnet is super heavy duty.) Take the two thick foam pieces, cat and shoe, and place them on the staircase. Place the cat on the board first, then decide where you are converting to, and place the shoe on that step.

Finally, the students count how many steps it takes for the cat to get to the shoe and then either multiply or divide by 10 according to the arrow on the chart. Presto! It's magical how easy this concept is to teach with this handy visual. Educational Insights has also included several printables with a visual included. They have done all the hard work for you. You gotta love this product, and I was thrilled to review it for them.
